Jerry and Townsend were actually pretty good friends I understand. There is an interview somewhere and Garcia discusses 81 tour and him and Pete getting really high and talking about the drags of being rock stars. Also why Garcia and weir attended opening of tow sends broadway revival show back in the late 80s or early 90's? Or whenever it was

The Who was on the verge of breaking up in March '81 and Pete was pretty depressed about it, as I recall that story. The Dead played those shows at his request.
